Watching movies on TV, catching clips on smartphones or streaming series online – videos are influencing our daily life. The technic behind is still very young – cellphone cameras, platforms like YouTube etc. exist only since the turn of the millennium. Let's find out what's no longer contempory and which media is our favorite?
The choice of TV stations and programs is enormous
There are around 400 private TV programs and briefly 60 special interest channels in Germany. That´s what the numbers from the german media authorities tell. There are always brand-new programs that have willingness to enter the hard-fought TV market.
Laptop, TV, Smartphone – Which devices are used by Germans?
Since 1970 nearly all households in Germany have at least one TV or radio device at home. The once revolutionary Desktop-Computer is something rarely nowadays. In the same time the number of Notebooks, Laptops, Netbooks and Tablets increased a lot. The same is true for the smartphones. In times of social media, they are indispensable for young adults. The numbers from the media authorities tell the same story: In 2016 48 million Germans owned a smartphone. They want to be reachable and online all the time. Overall 100% of all household have at least one device where it’s possible to watch TV. That´s the conclusion from the “ARD/ZDF study about mass communication in 2015”.
Daily TV usage in Germany
The Germans watched 223 minutes of television in 2016 over a period of three years – identical to the year 2000. A change is seen in the different age classes: Elder people are watching more and more TV (2016, 311 minutes). Teens (2016, 81 minutes) and young adults (2016, 119 minutes) are watching less TV then previously. Those are the results from the media authorities. For the young generation the internet is getting way more popular.
Online everywhere and anytime
Nearly 90 percent of the Germans over 14 years are online. That is the result from the “ARD/ZDF online study 2017”. 149 minutes per day is the average German person online. The internet influences our daily life with services like TV, YouTube, Facebook or News. One hour of that time we´re spending with WhatsApp and other services and 45 minutes are used for media. Teens and young adults (14 to 29 y/o) use most of their time for online media.
Smartphone cameras – What is a standard today was a novelty in 2002
The first cell phone with an integrated camera in Germany was released in 2002. It had no more than 0.3 megapixels. The first phone with a video camera followed the next year. If you buy a smartphone today: 4K (horizontal resolution of 4.000 pixels) and an image stabilizer are a must have. Due to that it’s easier than ever to produce high quality content yourself.
YouTube, VOD platforms, streaming services
YouTube, video streaming, VOD (video on demand) platforms or Facebook – the choice of moving images is huge. The “ARD/ZDF online study” says that the daily video usage on the internet has doubled in the last two years (2014-2016) and is now 26%. In addition 72 percent of all Germans occasionally watched a video in 2016 on the internet. A similar picture is shown by the YouTube statistics: In a single day YouTube users watch videos with a total duration of a billion hour.
VOD platforms versus streaming services
The video offerings from classic TV stations in the form of live broadcasts and VOD platforms have a much bigger coverage on the Internet than paid services as Netflix, Watchever or Maxdome. In 2016 only 18 percent of the videos watched online where by streaming providers. That is the result from the “ARD/ZDF online study 2016”.
Streaming services score with their own high quality content
But the future of the video streaming services looks bright. They have more and more users although their services are fee-based. But you´re able to watch it anytime you want and without disrupting commercial breaks. The offers from the providers are still minor. But every day they have new movies, documentaries and series. Some of them are licensed and some are self-produced. The investment is enormous: Approximately Amazon invested four and a half billion in own productions, Netflix six billion. 2018 Netflix even wants to spend eight billion for own movies and series. This is much more than the TV stations are investing.
Conclusion: Video is on the rise
All those statistics prove that video is as important as never before on the television and online. The content exchange is always difficult to manage. The platform from Welt der Wunder can reform this issue. This platform is unique and has the potential to evolve into a standard in the international license trading sector. In the future, it will offer all content owners the opportunity to provide their content to a global market and to facilitate access to purchasers, advertisers and users.
