When we are in love, we like to listen to heartbreak ballads. Beautiful weather calls for cheerful sounds. There is the right music for every mood. Hard rhythms make the heart race, soft melodies soothe.
We instinctively know what effect the respective music triggers in the body and especially in the brain. We use them specifically to vent our mood or to influence it. Music reflects our life for what it is: an emotional up and down. As a supplement to traditional healing methods, music is therefore also used in medicine.
Music therapy helps with depression
Numerous clinical studies have been able to prove the anxiolytic and pain-relieving effect of music. Researchers and physicians are observing effects such as muscle relaxation, lowering heart rate and blood pressure or stabilizing the breathing rhythm.
Taking into account the respective symptoms of the disease and the drug treatment, music therapy is very promising and is mainly used for mental illnesses such as depression or anxiety disorders. Studies show that listening to a favorite piece of music releases dopamine and thus provides a feeling of well-being .
Music relieves symptoms
People with disabilities or other impairments are also treated with music therapy. The patient actively participates by playing an instrument or singing. In a conversation with the therapist, the experiences, emotions and wishes gained are then worked on. This procedure is accordingly called active music therapy.
However, the therapy can also be receptive, i.e. the patient listens to specially selected pieces of music together with the therapist. This sets mental and physical processes in motion to alleviate the symptoms.
